You can generate an ssh private key (sometimes called a 'keypair') through Amazon EC2 on the AWS console or through the AWS command line tools (ec2-add-keypair). Save the private key file in a safe place. The base file name is the name you specified as the name of your key pair, and the file name extension is.pem. The private key file is automatically downloaded by your browser. For Key pair name, enter a name for the new key pair, and then choose Create. This tool is available for both Windows and Unix operating system users to convert keys. You can use the PuTTYgen tool for this conversion. You must convert your private key into a.ppk file before you can connect to your instance using PuTTY. PuTTY does not natively support the private key format (.pem) generated by Amazon EC2.
